Ming Thing, Cereus forbesii monstrose, Large Cactus

Cereus forbesii monstrose, Commonly called Ming Thing, is one of the most unusually shaped cacti that you'll find. The very word Monstrose means having a deformed, abnormal, and distorted body. The Monstrose form of Cereus forbesii results from a genetic defect in the meristem. Meristem being the growing tip of a normal plant. In the Monstrose cactus variants, a non-hereditary genetic defect causes the growing tissue to be distributed throughout the plant instead of being concentrated at the tips of the main stem and branches. New growth occurs all over the plant causing weird shapes, bulges, curls, and overall crazy appearance relative to the non-monstrose or usual form of the plant.

The monstrose genetic defect is not inherited, it can only be propagated through cuttings of an existing monstrose mutant.

The Ming Thing (Cereus forbesii monstrose) may or may not flower depending upon the folding growth patterns that can hinder flower development. If it does flower, it produces impressive white flowers. With or without flowers, this cactus is an amazing, eye-catching display piece for any collection. Because of the random growth patterns maximum size can vary. About 12 inches tall and six inches wide is typical maximum size for Ming Thing.

Ming Thing is a cactus that actual doesn't mind being in a shaded area and does not want full direct sunlight. While we always caution against overwatering any cactus, monstrose versions, including Ming Thing, require even less water than their non-monstrose counterparts.

Your Cereus forbesii monstrose (Ming Thing) cactus will be planted and well-established in a 4" nursery pot, of similar size and condition to those shown in the photos. Your Ming Thing will be well-packed for shipment by USPS Priority or First Class Mail.

Shipping Times, Methods, and Costs?

Most plants are shipped by USPS Priority Mail or USPS . In cold months we only ship by Priority Mail to minimize shipping times and we strongly recommend that you add a heat pack to your order to protect your plants from cold damage. The heat packs are priced low to cover our cost and can mean the difference between receiving a happy, healthy plant or a plant that is damaged or killed by cold exposure. Our mission is to help you grow good things, and that starts with taking every precaution in shipping to make sure your plant arrives in good condition. If there is any issue with your order when you receive it, please let us know.
